Vanishing Labyrinths of the Isles of Scilly

Vanishing Labyrinths of the Isles of Scilly was a public art project centred around the uniquely Scillonian practice of building pebble mazes near the islands’ coasts, which is a pre-20th century tradition unique in Britain. Delivered by artists Teän Roberts and Layan Harman in partnership with the Isles of Scilly Museum and Cultural Centre and supported by Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, it was simultaneously a community heritage and a fine arts project.

Exploring the relationship between the archaeological establishment and folk understandings of heritage, local history and connection to lost folk practices, and themes of magic, divination, and symbolism, the project had three main parts. Firstly, the survey and community-led restoration of a ruined maze (dating from 1952) at Giant’s Castle on St Mary’s. Secondly, a summer festival of labyrinthine pageantry celebrating Scilly’s labyrinth heritage. And thirdly, an exhibition and series of talks presenting both academic research and original artworks inspired by this tradition.
